Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • tsp salt
  • cups warm water (105–110°F)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • baking sheet
  • pastry brush
  • kitchen towel
  • parchment paper

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar and yeast with warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil and salt. Gradually stir in flour, mixing until a sticky dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down dough and divide into 4–6 pieces. Shape into sub rolls and place on parchment-lined baking sheet. Let rise for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with egg wash, sprinkle with seeds, and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Cool completely before slicing to avoid crumbling.

Notes

For richer flavor, try using butter instead of olive oil. Add 2 tablespoons of milk powder to the dry ingredients for softer rolls. You can also brush rolls with garlic butter post-baking or top with herbs or shredded cheese for variety. Freeze extras to enjoy fresh rolls anytime!
