Preparation
  1. Cook the pasta according to package instructions and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until smooth.
  3. Gradually add the milk, continuing to whisk until the mixture thickens.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheese until melted and smooth.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Fold in the cooked pasta and any optional ingredients.
Cooking
  1. Pour the mixture into a baking dish, top with breadcrumbs if desired, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
